Guardiola on Haaland: “As soon as he scored, I thought, “Johan Cruyff””

Erling Haaland’s brilliant late winner against Borussia Dortmund prompted PEP Guardiola to compare him to Johan Cruyff.

With six minutes left in a close Champions League match at the Etihad Stadium, Haaland startled his former team by leaping and stretching to turn in a swerving Joao Cancelo cross.

After falling behind 1-0 until John Stones’ spectacular 80th-minute equalizer, his goal capped a late City rally and secured a 2-1 victory.

In addition, it was Haaland’s 13th goal in nine games since his summer transfer from Dortmund to City.

Guardiola, the manager of City, played alongside Dutch legend Cruyff at Barcelona. He said: “Perhaps those who know me are aware of the impact Johan Cruyff has had on my life as a person, a mentor, and a manager.

He scored a fantastic goal against Atletico Madrid at Camp Nou years ago. Today, Haaland did something similar, and when he scored, I immediately thought of Johan Cruyff. It was really comparable.

“Joao provided an outstanding assist, and it was a really good one.”

Guardiola also thought Haaland reminded him of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as if that were not a favorable comparison already.

“I remember my great friend Ibrahimovic had this ability to place the leg on the ceiling, and Erling is fairly similar in that regard,” he recalled.

“I believe it is in his character. He can make the contact and put the ball in the goal since he is elastic and flexible.

After a goalless first half, Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham scored with a header just before the hour to put Dortmund ahead. City struggled during that time.

In response, Guardiola made three substitutions, giving his team a new sense of urgency.

City earned a tough victory that propelled them to the top of Group G with six points after two games, thanks to Stones’ long-range goal and Haaland’s late effort.
